The playground is an essential part of any school and every community. Your children spend part of their day learning on the playground. What are they learning?
If the playground is unstructured, with “lifeguard-style” supervision your students are learning the rules of the jungle – the strong prevail and the weak get out of the way. The results are increased bullying and intimidation and decreased social problem-solving skills. These formative years have direct impact on social interaction in college, career, citizenship and family.
Paideia Academies has teamed up with the Playworks Recess Program. Our playground is a vibrant time of activities and games kids love to play. These structured playground activities help make activity time more positive and productive. The Paideia playground program is intended to maximize the number of students involved in physical/social interaction activity, rather than having them wait in line, or just stand around talking.
Paideia Academy does not employ playground aides. We instead employ and train playground coaches. Our playground coaches are not playground “lifeguards” standing around waiting for trouble and blowing whistles. Our playground coaches are engaged with teaching students the rules and techniques of the playground games and conflict resolution skills. The Paideia playground teaches children the value of wholesome recreation and the positive culture of social problem solving – critical skills for today’s world!
Paideia Academies has Teamed up with Playworks!
Playworks is the leading national nonprofit leveraging the power of play to transform children’s social and emotional health. Playworks reaches 900,000 students at 1,800 schools in 23 U.S. cities directly and through professional training services.
Playworks is changing school culture by leveraging the power of safe, fun, and healthy play at school every day. Playworks’ vision is for 3.5 million kids in 7,000 elementary schools nationwide to experience safe and healthy play every day by 2020.
Paideia Academy is committing to making recess a fun, inclusive place for every kid in our community to play every day. That’s why we’ve teamed up with Playworks TeamUp to strengthen our school community.
The Playworks site coordinator spends a week each month at our school leading, supporting, and training our recess team—including a lead recess coach—to create a safe, inclusive playground for all students. We learn and perfect the latest techniques used to positively transform our school environment–from the playground to the classroom.
